After the liberation of Raqqa from Daesh, in which the YPJ (women’s defense units) have played a major role, two women’s councils have opened in order to ensure the political participation of women, to protect them against patriarchal violence and discrimination and to transform their place in society.
Previous to the opening of these councils, « ideological lessons were given during the 25 days of training to empower women and make them aware of their role in the society » according to ANF news.
New councils have also been opened in Qamishlo canton by the womens organisation Kongreya Star.
